How Much Time and Money Should I Spend On My Education In Becoming An Entrepreneur?

by Lori on December 17, 2009

Time and MoneyHow much time and money should I spend on my education in becoming an entrepreneur is a question that I hear asked throughout the industry? In the beginning of my journey on the path to becoming that great entrepreneur I guess I thought that question in my mind but I did not ask it out loud to anyone. Probably because I thought it was a crazy question to begin with simply because people spend thousands or maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars going to college to acquire more education.

So, why not spend that on becoming an entrepreneur in the industry you want to be in? The answer came to me in a flash, “It does not matter, you spend as much time and money as you need to become the best at what you do.” Wow, that I know is shocking to most because the next question is “Why?” Well, the answer is that  I have found that the people with the most money in their bank accounts have invested the most money into their education and have read the most books on personal development.

Just a point you may want to always remember, invest into your education, no matter the time or the cost, be a value driven person, find out all the ways that you can give value away. The more valuable you become to others the more you are pursued. The more people want to know what it is that you do and want to know how they can do it to.

Become a master sponge soak up everything that you can to better yourself and then in turn you can share it with others to help them better themselves. That was some education right there in those words that you just got for FREE. Use them don’t just let them sit on the page and stare at them take action go read a book on how to become a better you.

You cannot expect to make money if you do not invest some money into YOU!

There are people who whine and complain about spending $50to $100 on training seminars and those are the people who are struggling in their business. There are people who spend from $200 to $20,000 or more just to catch one nugget that will change their life and their business and in the end it is worth it. They are the ones who have succeeded, they are the ones who realized that it does not matter the time or the cost, what matters most is what you have learned, how you have become a value to others and how you can help others achieve that same value.

Again, remember there is no end to your educating yourself in your industry, there is no end in becoming a better you. That one single line should have been a turning point or an “aha” moment for some of you and if not go back and read it again and again until it is.

Great advice, Lori! Your post fits perfectly with my fortune cookie message from yesterday “Your Best Investment Is In Yourself!” There have been times when I've been to a seminar just knowing there was something there for me, sitting for so long I began questioning my intuition, and then finally being rewarded when I heard that “nugget” of information that I needed!

Thanks for the perspective Lori, I agree that education whether formal or informal is still valuable if the education is put to use properly. So many people go to college and wind up never even using there degrees, so I believe it still boils down to how the education is used.

There is always some value in education no matter how small or insignificant it may appear on the surface or how long it takes to find it. Thanks Teresa for the comment.

I Love this post Lori put on a trip down memory lane thinking of different sacrifices that ive made in the past to go to a particular training or seminar. I would always leave the events feeling so Empowered and it usually made the sacrifice seem insignificant. Thanks for this valuable info

    Fab post Lori,

I have always called myself a sponge when it comes to soaking up new knowledge…but after reading your post I feel like I have been doing myself a dis-service. I am in fact a Master Sponge lol.

We have to invest in ourselves, we are our best asset afterall but results dont come from knowledge alone. Real results come from action.

    Beth :-)
