How Much Money Have You Made In Your Network Marketing Business?

by Lori on January 11, 2011

How much money have you made in your network marketing business? Do people ask you that question when you share your business opportunity with them?  What about when you don’t share your business and they just ask you anyway?

What did you do? Did you tell them how much money you made?  Did you try to justify the amount because maybe you have not been in your business that long?  Or did you stand your ground and not give that person a response?

The reason for these questions is because I had a guy the other day hit me up on Facebook and ask me, “Hey Lori, how much money did you make in your business in November and December? Now be honest with me!

I was floored!!!!  I told him that my own mom did not ask me those types of questions.  I mean seriously I had no idea who this person was and out of the blue he asks me that question.  I guess we were connected on Facebook and he has been following me for sometime but REALLY!!!

He was persistent so I explained to him that it did not matter how much money I made his results would be different from mine and every other person based on his business, comp plan, marketing, personal development, etc.  I thought is was a good answer to the question, since I figured he was new to the industry and just did not know the correct questions to ask.  Boy was I wrong!!

That still was not enough for him, he began quoting the bible, something about the blind can’t lead the blind, and his mom told him to only follow successful people and he can only follow people who are making money!

I told him if that if that was the type of leader he wanted and was looking for, I am not the one and please do not follow me because I do not answer those types of questions, I do not need to!

He then tells me and I quote “ I’m not going to come to your house with a gun and stick you up and take your money I just want to know how much you made!!!” !  I am NOT making this stuff up, I DO NOT know this guy! This was crazy and a little scary!!!!

I hit the delete button and he is no longer a friend of mine on Facebook!

He actually thought that I would tell him after that, RIGHT!!!  He may read this and I hope he does so maybe he will never do it again, unbelievable!!!!

Please do not ever go around asking people how much money they have made in their company because it really is none of anyone’s business, you can’t spend it and frankly it does not matter.

I know people base their decisions on whether or not they join a person based on the leaders bank account which is okay because you know they must have results to have made so much money but let them TELL you, don’t ask!!!

I would love to hear your feed back and comments on if you have been asked that question before and what your response was and why you think people do this!

Wow , Lori this was crazy ! Lucky he was only on Facebook & not in Person !
You did the right thing by telling him that it does very from business to business & to person to person .
It sounds like he may need some help or may need to know more about Network Marketing .
I am glad to hear that you deleted him. Hopefully he will not bother you again !!

I know Bob, I still cannot believe that guy but there are a lot of people like him out here and I hope this post will get them to think about what they do before they do it.

Oh my gosh Lori – that guy is crazy and it is a good thing that you deleted him! SOme people are just unbelievable. I totally agree with your approach that you do not need to tell anyone how much money you make because it definitely doesn’t guarantee they will do the same. Thanks!

Glyna, I do believe he is crazy! It just goes to show you that some people do not have the right mindset to be in our industry. Thanks for your comment and support.

    Hi Lori!

Wow…..just out of the blue like that????? People are amazing! He had some agenda that had nothing to do with you! Whenever people take that kind of hostile approach, it is about something deeper.

You handled it really. I congratulate you!

OMG, talk about a freaky guy. Good thing you disconnected from him. CRAZY

When it comes to that question I still get it once every few weeks my standard reply to that questions is “How much of my money can you spend?” they usually say none. So I say “Well than it really doesn’t matter how much I make, but what matters is how much you are going to make, am I right?”

I keep my tonality at a level so they can feel that the question was in my eyes a dumb question.

If I have a conversation via chat online and I get the question, I counter the question with :”Why? Are you thinking of buying me out? If you do, I can give you my books, but just so you know I don’t accept any offers below 25 Million, do you have that kind of Money?”

But of course nut cases who quote the bible might not go away. So you are better off getting as far away as possible.

    Hey Lori,

I think anyone who has ever been in MLM has heard that question from either a prospect, friend or family member.

Some people want to see your success first because they are too afraid to step out of their comfort zone and actually try it themselves.

Sometimes I answer it and sometimes I don’t depending the source of the question. If it’s some one I have a relationship with I have no problem with that type of question.

But coming from an acquaintance that just connected through social media I would have responded in the same way as you!

    In Success,
    Howie Perks

P.S ~ How much are you making?? Ha.. just kidding ;)

I can understand why someone would want to ask… but I NEVER would! I wouldn’t even ask my best friend this question. And then to persist in trying to get you to tell him?!!

If I really wanted to know about a particular business, I would ask to see the Policies & Procedures, and the Comp Plan. That would give me a far better idea of whether or not I could succeed in that company.

Thanks for being open and sharing this, Lori. You were right in deleting the guy.

Willena, I am learning quickly that you meet all types and you have to weed out the bad seeds.

I hope you’re not offended that this had me laughing, Lori! What a social faux pas! Just because we meet on the internet doesn’t mean generally accepted social norms disappear! Don’t you wonder when he visits his doctor or dentist if he asks how much they make. Does he ask anyone else how much they make or were you just fair game because you’re in network marketing and on the internet? I’m pretty sure that even if he follows only “successful” people, he’s going to get very different results until he learns some manners.

Great heavens, people actually ASK this??!!
As much as I might like to know, I would never dream of asking anyone what they earned, much less give an answer if asked!

And it really is like you said, everyone is so utterly different that your results will probably not be mine, and all results are certainly not typical!

  • http://www.workwithlorirobertson.info Lori Robertson

    Teresa,

No way, it is kind of funny and sad at the same time, because there are so many people like him out there, that just do not know any better.

    Jacqueline,

Sometimes I am amazed myself at the questions I get. Once people realize that their success is not based on what another person has and it is within themselves they will want to kick themselves!

Wow that was hilarious! It never ceases to amaze me how people manipulate the bible for their own justification! The good news is that you didnt invest much time with him. I am not sure why people ask that question .

  • http://www.workwithlorirobertson.info Lori Robertson

    Sheena,

Thanks for your comment, I am at a loss too as to why people do such things, the only thing I can think of is they have not been properly trained in our industry.

Amazing story. I would say that he has his priorities all mixed up. If you want to find out if someone is worth following, you find out what they can teach you, not how much money they are making.
Besides, that is a very personal question and nobody should put you in that kind of position. You handled it well.

I’m torn on this topic. While I will not usually go so far as to ask, its often a useful question not only for proving the individual knows how to get results ( no exact number needed), but an even better question to make those that won’t l…eave me alone about their opportunity choke and back- peddle when their game of pending to be successful when they couldn’t sponsor one last month gets revealed. Show me the facts… That its worked as presented for you, that it’ll work for me, that it meets a need or interest of mine and that you are proven competent to teach it. Harsh? Sure is. I like results… And putting my ass in the fire with enough knowledge that when something doesn’t work for me its not because of who I SELECTED to work with, but because I didn’t work it. If a leader is proven on all grounds, then the responsibility for failure should I take on a project with them, pending unseen information, is all my own. This is a loophole most are to chicken to close. While specific numbers are none of my business, approximations may very well be my business when selecting the best or worst place to tether myself into a business. ( Its a double edged sword though to evaluate on income as high earners rarely have time for personalized hand holding worth new recruits and often someone in ” middle management” can be a better pick to place between yourself and that high earner so you have a safety net of someone that does have a little time should you honestly require it.)

Thanks a bunch, I tried to.

    Kim,

Your insight into this is awesome and I agree with it. This guy was so relentless that he just became such a pain. There is a right way to find this out and he just went about it all the wrong ways. Thanks Kim I loved this comment.
