Do You Worry About What People Think About Your New MLM Business?

by Lori on June 7, 2010

Do you worry about what people think about your new MLM business? Are you afraid to talk to people that you know to share with them the great opportunity that you are in. There are a lot of people who are really scared to talk to their friends, family and co-workers for fear of rejection. Some people cannot handle being told “NO” to and they just quit their business before it even has a chance to show any results.

Isn’t amazing how we base what we do on the opinions of others. We ask our broke uncle Joe about our business and he says, “I heard about something like that, it’s a scam, I would not do that if I were you.” The crazy thing about that is, we listen to broke uncle Joe. My question is “WHY!”

Why do we listen to people who are not successful, have never been successful and have no intention on being successful, when we want to be successful?

I ran across something that I read in one of my favorite books “The Slight Edge” that you may find very interesting. There was an article about funerals, and it stated that “At the average funeral about 10 people cry.” It also stated that ” Once those ten people cried, blew their nose and it was over, the number one factor that would determine how many people would go on from the funeral to attend the actual burial would be the weather!” WOW!

It continued on to state that, “If it was raining only fifty percent of the people who attended the funeral would decide not to go to your funeral.” Now that really sucks. This show you that the sky shed more tears with the rain than the actual people that say that they have loved you over your lifetime. People cry more for singers, professional ball players, movie stars and they do not even know them!. That is so depressing, but at the same time can actually start to have you look at life and your business in  a totally different way.

If that is all of the people who really cared about you and your accomplishments anyway then why are you so concerned with what they think?. Why worry about them rejecting you? When I read that it totally changed me and how I looked at my business and my life. I no longer care what people think.

I share my business with everyone and if they are not smart enough to realize that whether it is my business or a business that they feel passionate about, if they want to be truly successful they have to do something different than what they are doing.

If they decide not to at least look at what I am doing, I DO NOT CARE!  You should not either. My suggestion is to keep sharing what you do with everyone that is interested, keep enjoying, and keep loving what you do. Be bold and determined and your success will not be denied!

Please share this with everyone that you know who may feel or have felt this way before and I am sure that after hearing about the funeral they will also look at things a little differently.

    Hi Lori,
I LOVE “The Slight Edge”! It is one of my favorite books of all time in the personal development/network marketing arenas. Jeff Olsen really gets at the heart of the matter in it…one of my favorite lines from it is” “It's easy to do, it's easy not to do.” You have no idea how many times I have whispered those words to myself when I am facing something I am not terribly excited about but know I need to do.

Being transparent with others and giving them the chance to look at what we are doing is difficult for many, yet is a cornerstone of being a successful entrepreneur. I think what trips most people up is the network marketing part. You rarely hear of entrepreneurs who have started knitting businesses or dog walking businesses NOT promoting themselves to friends and family, but if MLM is associated with the business, people are afraid. If only they knew the power and the legitimacy of this business model!

Thanks for your passion about teaching others about this topic.

    Hey Lori,

Another great post, I haven't read the slight edge so I will go look for it tomorrow. You are so true in everything you say. It is natural to feel horrible everytime we hear rejection but as long as you believe in yourself nothing else really matters.

Oh and thank you for reminding me I need to put a Clause in my WILL to make sure that everyone brings a umbrella to my funeral. Can't have anyone missing my last big adventure in this body.

Hehe…no doubt there will be virtual online funerals by the time I go anyway, I'm going back packing at 80 so I am gunna be atleast 100.

Too much to do, too much to learn,
    Beth xx

    Hi Lori

I love this article!! My mother always said ” don't worry about what others think about you, because they are too busy worrying about what others are thinking about them.” You are so right on.. that it does not matter what people think and in fact, it's none of their business!!

Years ago when I stopped that nonsense in my prospecting efforts, and realized I was giving people a gift, I attracted the right people into my life and business. In fact one mentor really took the pressure off by telling me ” They are ALREADY NOT IN YOUR BUSINESS!! So you can relax!!! calling the heaviest of hitters was alot easier!! Think about that one!!

    Thanks for the great post

Been there, Lori!! Your post gave me such a lift! I used to think of it as offering a gift to join me in something I loved doing. Not everyone enjoys the same thing so I never felt bad if they weren't interested.

Christine this is probably my favorite book, it has really changed my life and how I look at life. Yes I am very passionate about everything this book shares. Thanks for your comment.

  • lorirobertson7

LOL, Evin we all have a broke uncle Joe, even if his name is Larry, John or whatever they all are the same. If you click on the link it will take you to the site to get the book. It is so worth it, you will be amazed when you read it.

  • lorirobertson7

Beth, I want to be right there with you at 100, so many things to do, places to go people to see and money to make. I mentioned to Evin if you click on the link in the article you should be able to go and purchase it. This will be one of those books that you read over and over again.

  • lorirobertson7

Laura, I think all of my life I never really cared what other people thought I just let them think that I did. After I read the book I am so glad that I never did. You are right heavy hitters are easier to get into your business, they already see it.

  • lorirobertson7

Good for you you are right never feel bad Teresa it is there loss not yours, that is how I look at it. There are so many people out there that want to change their life and are will to step out and do it not matter what. I agree with you.

    Hi Lori,

This indeed is a very powerful message… I think that many people fail because of the difficulty of overcoming what people think… a lot of people told me that I was wasting my time and every single opportunity on line is a scam and do I really want to associate myself with that type of person etc etc… I've never been one for taking advice – at least not from someone that knows less than me on the topic – thank goodness!

    Great Post… Thank you!

    Kind regards,

    Emma :)

    Hi Lori,

It's so true that our nearest and dearest are the one's that will always be negative towards your new business. I did hear once that it's because they are scared that you will make it that they don't want to get left behind. Well tough I say.

Great post and thanks for sharing, I will be back to read more of your great posts.

I love this. You are the kind of person we all want in our personal businesses,a go-getter and passionate. I agree with what you stated here 100%.Have you ever read the book Go for No! by Richard Fenton. Very good for network marketers.

    Lori,
You have spoken very true words. People do not understand this, yet they feel they have the right to tell you what to do. It all boils down to choices. Wouldn't the world be a very boring place if we all did, said & thought the same thing!

Glad you are totally behind your business model. It's a great model, with the correct mindset.
    Val ;)

Getting into a binary network marketing company early on can be the key to long term income. Or joining an affiliate company like SiteSell that lets you take advantage of the Internet is even better.

  • lorirobertson7

Yes Emma thank goodness you did not listen to those broke people LOL!

  • lorirobertson7

Tristram, I heard the exact same thing and I do believe that it is true, they are so scared to step out that they try to keep you back with them so as not to leave them behind. So sad but so true.

  • lorirobertson7

Thanks Bridgette, I am glad you did.

  • lorirobertson7

Beverly, thanks for the kind words! No I have never read the book but I will go pick it up and add it to my book collection.

  • lorirobertson7

Yes, Val it would definitely be boring. If we believe in what we do then it is very easy to stand behind it faithfully, thanks for the comment.

  • lorirobertson7

Ahmedabad, I think that whatever it is that you do as long as you do not let anyone who has not been successful fill your head with nonsense you will find the income that you seek. Thanks for the comment.

iLearningGlobal certainly sounds promising but there’s very little mention as to what’s actually being offered. And with the way things are right now with the economy, less and less people are going to want to jump into something without knowing what they’re actually jumping into. So a little more information would certainly be helpful.

    Great post Lori,

When I first got into network marketing I was really hesitant on sharing my opportunity with others. But I got to thinking, if those people aren't looking for success or think that it is too far fetched for them, then why should I care about their opinion about my opportunity? Like Brian Carruther's said “Massive Exposure, Means Massive Income”. Share with the world! Not everyone thinks the same.

  • lorirobertson7

Lladro I am not in ILearning Global the company's MLM side has been done away with, but if you would like to know more about it, you can google the company and they should have all of the information that you need to make an informed decision. Thanks for your comment.

  • lorirobertson7

Exactly Sherman, but we all learn after a while of being in the business that our opportunities will help someone and we should be proud to share it.

    Hey Lori!

Great points here. One thing that stuck out to me in my personal development journey is how people act like they care so much about what your doing (by putting it down, or sharing their negative thoughts with you) but in reality are too busy worrying about themselves to be very concerned with you at all.

So if people make a comment to you, you will probably spend more time worrying about it than they will thinking about what you are actually doing.

To sum it up, you are absolutely right that you should consider who you are speaking too and decide if they are really someone you should listen to or not.

    Appreciate this information!

  • lorirobertson7

Amanda if more people would consider who they spoke and listened to we probably would have more successful people out here.

    Hi Lori,
“The Slight Edge” is probably my favorite book…I have learned so much from it in a way I connected with. It is sad to think that we tend to let the opinions from people we know, who actually may not even be informed enough to make a good opinion about something, influence our decisions so much. And how, as you mentioned, people who we don't even know may mean more to us than people not only know, but we are close to. Wow! I enjoyed your post ~ thanks for sharing ;-) Christine

Your post is another great example of why we should never allow someone else to deter us from our dreams….. especially those who have given up pursuing their own! Thanks for the reminder….

    Hi Lori,
Thanks for the great reminder that in order to be successful you need to surround or follow the people who have done what you are trying to do. I have not read Slight Edge but thanks for the recommendation. I have added it to my to do list.
    Brenda

  • lorirobertson7

Thanks Robin, glad you enjoyed, unfortunately a lot of people do listen to unsuccessful people and let them talk them out of their dreams, lucky for us we did not.

  • lorirobertson7

Brenda, you are going to love the book, let me know when you have, I would love to hear your feedback on the book.

    Hi Lori,

thanks for sharing your insights. The “Slight Edge” is really amazing. And I remember this section with the funeral example very well…it’s about if and how we make a difference in people’s lives.

What other people think about me, is none of my business. My business is what I think about myself. Most people I know know what I’m doing, so they are free to ask me if they want further information. I think, this happens for a reason.

The people I used to hang out with weren’t the people who drove me to build a business. They are rather the crabs in the bucket trying to hold everyone back.

    What do you think ?

    Take care

    Oliver

Oliver thanks for the great comment you are awesome and I do agree with you there are a lot of crab in the bucket mentality going on in every aspect of our lives.

Great points Lori. I especially liked it when you said “Why do we listen to people who are not successful, have never been successful and have no intention on being successful, when we want to be successful?” That pretty well sums it up. 95% of people are going to die by the time they reach retirement age or be dead broke. I only listen to the 5%.

Michael, the people who have a higher success intention only listen to successful people, you my friend are one of those people. Thanks for sharing your comments.
